Sonic the Hedgehog: Tim Miller Promises ‘Fans Will be Pleased’ with Redesign

In surprising response to early audience reactions, the team behind the upcoming live-action Sonic the Hedgehog was tasked with redesigning the star character after the first trailer was released. When the live-action Sonic debuted in April, the disapproval from fans was immediate, and loud. They cited the uncomfortably human features such as eyes, teeth and calves. Director Jeff Fowler responded quickly, and promised changes. It’s been several months since then, and progress on the redesign is still underway. Producer Tim Miller recalled the incident and spoke about the studios willingness to go back and redesign the character, saying “this is a franchise, and it has to be great.” He explained that neither he nor Fowler was satisfied with the initial design. “Look, I was with fans, and so was Jeff. When the s–t hit the fan, I went over there and said, ‘The most important thing to do, man, is say, I f***ed up.’” He then provided a small but important update about the redesigned Sonic, revealing that he’d seen the new look, promising, “I think the fans will be pleased.” Sonic the Hedgehog centers on the titular superpow...

The Slipper for the World Cup Champions | Editorial | Bend | The Source Weekly

Years ago, the Source used the “Boot” and “Slipper” terminology on its Opinion page, calling out the “bad” and “good” actors who deserved some type of recognition. While we’ve sunsetted using that format on a regular basis, we reserve the right to bring it back—like when the U.S. wins the FIFA Women’s World Cup, for the second time in a row. This team earns The Slipper this week, not just for taking home the top honors, but for using their victories to highlight a number of issues still in play for women, for LGBTQ+ people and for athletes worldwide. Here are just some of the ways the U.S. women’s team is advancing dialogue on important topics—and why they’re getting the Slipper. The topic of equal pay has been at the forefront of people’s minds this week, having been a battle cry for the U.S. women’s soccer team since long before the World Cup. In this recent World Cup, women competed for a prize purse totaling about $30 million. By contrast, the men’s World Cup contenders will battle for a prize purse of $440 million. That $30 million was already doubled over what FIFA originally offered ...

‘Medicare for All’ can mean at least two different things

The slogan “Medicare for All” can mean two things. Well, at least two. One of them would be a much bigger, and, to some people, much scarier change than the other. But the two meanings are both out there, which isn’t really helpful but makes it necessary to clarify the two ideas. Sen. Kamala Harris, D-California, who is considered a top contender for the Democratic nomination for president in 2020, gave a CNN televised town hall forum Tuesday night. She came across as strong, smart and brave. But my feelings about the “brave” part was undermined when I subsequently read about a small maneuver she employed to fuzz up her position on the future of health care. In response to a question, Harris said that she absolutely favors a “Medicare for All” program. Her words suggested that she meant the version of “Medicare for All” that completely replaces and eliminates private health insurance and replaces it with what is sometimes called “single payer.” But maybe not. Let me try to clarify/explore a few terms, because we’ll hear a lot about this matter as next campaign develops. Under “single payer,” doctors and nurses are not all government employees and the federal government doesn’t ...

Sky wish lanterns, also known as Kongming lanterns, have the potential to cause havoc on our South Carolina shore properties. This “fireball in the sky” has burned marshes, docks, homes, killed livestock and polluted our waterways, streams and oceans. The Boy Scouts of America have banned them as an “unmanned fire.” Kongming lanterns are sent off by the dozens at Lowcountry celebrations and memorial events, beaches and plantations, with disregard to dry conditions. Biodegradable? S.C. Fire Marshal Policy states this product is oil rice paper (or plastic), constructed on a bamboo frame containing a combustible fuel cell that, when lit, causes the lantern to rise and travel several miles. These are serious fire and safety hazards with the potential to start beachfront or home fires. Folly’s Beach averted tragedy four years ago, according to Mayor Tim Goodwin, when visitors sent the lanterns into the air. They were blown ...

Dig It: A Look Inside Geothermal Commercial Retrofit Opportunities | 2018-10-29

MULTIPLE CHOICE: Installing a loop field adjacent to a building like this may be common geothermal strategy, but it’s not the only way. “We’ve drilled inside buildings, under warehouses, driveways, and parking lots,” says Dan Rau, CEO of Colorado Geothermal Drilling. PHOTO COURTESY OF COMMON GROUND Heat started radiating from the center of the earth about 4.5 billion years ago, according to the Geothermal Energy Association. That landmark in geothermal history was eventually followed by the Commonwealth Building in Portland, Oregon, which became the first commercial building in the U.S. to employ a geothermal system for heating and cooling. While that building is now an American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE) National Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark, the name of the owner or project team who later pioneered the narrower category of geothermal commercial retrofits has been lost in the mists of time. Fortunately, the physics and benefits of a geothermal upgrade are anything but a mystery; in fact, they are pretty straightforward. “The biggest selling feature for a system is that a properly designed, installed, and priced system can cost similar to a conventional sys...

Atlas Copco Launches Mobile Electric VSD Compressors For Tough Environments

Throughout 2019, Atlas Copco will introduce several mobile electric Variable Speed Drive (VSD) air compressors to its E-Air range: from 250 up to 1100 cfm. These plug-and-play, electric-powered compressors are the ideal solution when working in a low emission zone. The absence of diesel emissions, combined with the low noise levels (as low as 61 dB(A)), make the E-Air range the perfect match for underground applications like mining or tunnelling, as air ventilation is a part of their running costs. While the fixed-speed electric compressor needs a start-up current peak, the VSD electric range offers best-in-class versatility.Efficiency is further aided by the optimal combination of the Variable Speed Drive and permanent magnet motor. Finally, it offers many features that are required in tough environments. A full range of VSD electric compressors will be launched at Bauma 2019.Hendrik Timmermans, Vice-President of Atlas Copco’s Portable Air division, commented: “From enhanced efficiency to improved noise levels and no diesel engine emissions, the benefits of going electric within specific applications cannot be overstated. The new Variable Speed Drive electric compressor r...
